Day 23: June 30, Cape Blanco to Gold Bluffs Beach, CA

The kids started a fire this morning (in the fire ring) and we slowly started our morning routine. Today’s going to be a big driving day so we need to get going. We head out through the small towns on the southern Oregon coast. This part of the state is almost as beautiful as the northern coast. It’s a pleasant drive. I’m finding that though we make little stops along the way, we’re taking fewer and fewer pictures. Our traveling life is becoming routine. Its very relaxing and I’m really not looking forward to returning to reality. We’ve all settled into this life. Well we finally arrive to the final state on our journey, California. We’re greeted by smoke from the fires and fog from the ocean. Much of our drive is through tall redwoods which meet the coast. We quickly arrive in Redwoods National Forest and take a slow scenic route through some very big trees. We decide that we’ll try and camp at Gold Bluff’s Beach, a small campground right on the ocean. The road to the campground is an unpaved, very narrow, and very twisty forest road down a steep grade to the beach. We get a site and settle in. Three bull elk with pretty large racks have made themselves comfortable in the campground area. Soon enough, though, we all (not the elk) go to the beach to check it out. The sand is black and covered by lots and lots of small rocks of all colors. Randi and I have a beer while the kids run off to help some guys dig up sand crabs for fishing bait. It’s a real relaxing afternoon on the beach. Randi and I collect just green-colored rocks… why? Why not? The kids stay busy collecting sand crabs. After a bit we head back and start a fire. We’re going to bbq veggie burgers tonight. It’s a nice night by the fire, some s’mores for dessert, then off to sleep.
